5 TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR DREAM ELOPEMENT FROM START TO FINISH – FROM AN ELOPEMENT PHOTOGRAPHER

Before we dive in, I want you to know that this is not a rulebook that you have to follow. In fact, this guide for planning your dream elopement was created to help spark some ideas and ultimately help you build a day that is authentically you.

ONE | THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT YOUR DAY TO FEEL LIKE

The most important thing to know about planning your dream elopement is that there is no right or wrong way to spend your day. Whether your want a day full of relaxing or one that screams adventure… YOU CAN MAKE IT WHATEVER YOU WANT.

I encourage you to take a moment, just the two of you, and envision your day. How do you want to feel throughout your entire elopement?

THINK ABOUT YOU.

Make sure that whatever you choose, it is important for you as a couple.

TWO | PICK A LOCATION AND A TIME OF YEAR

Think about the type of landscape you envision yourself getting married in.

With elopements, these options are endless! Do you envision yourself in the mountains, forest, coast, in an open field, next to a waterfall, on a glacier, or on a beach?

A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER

US or International
Favorite Seasons
Weather and Temperatures
Local or Well-versed Photographer

THREE | LOCATION-BASED PERMITS

Keep in mind your location may require accessing a permit. Especially if you want to elope in a National Park. 

Be flexible and consider areas outside the park that would be just as amazing. As photographers, one of our most important jobs is to scout these locations and have backups ready to go.

FOUR | KNOW WHO YOU ARE INVITING

Are family and friends coming? Or, are you planning a solo elopement?

Having some close family and friends can make the day so special. If you are inviting guests, try and keep the guest list under 30 and keep in mind, your location options may be limited. 

Just you two? That’s okay too! There are other special ways you can include family and friends.

WAYS TO INCLUDE FAMILY

Have them write you letters
Skype/Facetime afterward
Send out a “we’re eloping” cards
Ask them for marriage advice

Please note that some states allow you to self-solemnize. These states include Colorado, Kansas, Maine, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, California, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Nevada.

FIVE | CHOOSING YOUR ELOPEMENT VENDORS

Most likely, you will need elopement vendors for your big day.

Without a doubt, this is where your photographer can really come in handy. I’ve worked with SO many vendors, so no need to stress, I got you!

However, if you don’t want vendors, make sure that you know what you can and can’t travel with. Once you know those regulations, you can DIY your florals, pack a picnic, and even bake your own cake.
